Myanmar, Terrorism
International News: A shocking incident has come to light in Myanmar where a 6-year-old girl has been arrested on the charge of being a terrorist. It is alleged that this girl is associated with the organization that recently killed a retired army general. This incident took place in broad daylight in Myanmar's capital Yangon. The girl has been detained along with 15 other people who are accused of being terrorists.
On May 22, 68-year-old retired Brigadier General and former diplomat Cho Tun Aung was shot dead in Yangon. This murder happened when he was openly on the road. According to Myanmar's army-backed newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar, a total of 16 people have been arrested in this case, including this girl. According to the report, the girl is the daughter of the main accused in the murder.
Responsibility for this murder has been claimed by a rebel organization called Golden Valley Warriors, which is active in anti-army activities. They claim that Cho Tun Aung was constantly supporting the army's repressive operations, especially against civilians. That is why he was targeted. The Myanmar Army has declared this group a terrorist organization.
The army also alleged that the country's exiled government, the National Unity Government (NUG), was behind the murder. The army claims that the killer was paid about 200,000 Kyat (about 95 US dollars). However, the NUG has completely rejected these allegations. Their spokesperson says that they do not promote murder and the army's claim is false.
The situation in Myanmar has become extremely tense after the military coup of 2021. The army seized power by removing the government elected through general elections. After this, a civil war-like situation has arisen in the country. Common citizens, women and children who protest are also being put in jail. According to an independent organization AAPP, so far more than 600 children have been arrested and about 6,700 civilians have been killed.
Although the army repeatedly claims that its campaign is only to bring peace and stability, the truth is that human rights are being openly violated in Myanmar. Putting a 6-year-old girl in jail by calling her a terrorist is proof that the military rule there can now go to any extent. This step is further tarnishing the image of the Myanmar army all over the world.
